From first visit of Australia by an Afghan President early in the year to the first bilateral Political Consultation at the end of the year, and having many other initiatives in between, the Afghan-Australian relations in 2017 was a fruitful one.
We are happy to present this issue of Canberra Brief highlighting top 10 major events of 2017, which reflects a strong bond between the two nations.
This also highlights Afghan Embassy’s achievements in 2017 as a result of our team efforts carrying such a broad and deep bilateral relationship through dedications and hardworking.

Wellington, 6 September 2017 - Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, HE Wahidullah Waissi, has presented his credentials as a non-resident ambassador to New Zealand to HE the Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, Governor-General of New Zealand.
The ceremony was organized at the Government House in Wellington and attended by from the New Zealand Government.
HE Waissi conveyed warm greetings of HE Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, President, of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to HE Dame Reddy, to the Government and to the people of New Zealand.
He made a short speech and said: New Zealand and Afghanistan are separated by long distance, but the hearts and minds of the two friendly nations are getting closer. From a water-locked New Zealand to land-locked Afghanistan, we have shared commitments and common aspirations towards peace, security, prosperity and democracy.
Dame Patsy Reddy expressed her government's support to the stability and development process of Afghanistan and renewed and enduring bilateral relationship between both countries.
The Ambassador was companied by Mr. Mostainbellah Balagh, Counsellor of the Embassy of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Canberra.

Kabul, 4 October 2017 - Sir Peter Cosgrove, the Hon Governor-General of Australia visited Kabul and welcomed by His Excellency Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
At the side of this meeting, both heads of states visited the Afghanistan's National Cricket players and had a joint luncheon together.
Sir Cosgrove praised the Afghan Cricket team members and their acheivements in recent months. Their successful gains and wins is well-known to the world now.
The Governor-General met everyone of the attended players and expressed Australia's full support in the area of cricket.
Sir Cosgrove is fan of cricket andAfghan cricket team is one of his favorite teams.

Brisbane, 26 September 2017 - The Afghan Ambassador to Australia, HE Wahidullah Waissi, called on HE the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland.
This was arranged during the first official visit of Afghan new Ambassador to Australia.
The Governor of Queensland welcomed the Ambassador to Brisbane and discussed the potentials for greater cooperation within the scope and capacity of this State.
Ambassador Waissi thanked the Governor and paid tribute to the sacrifices of the Australian soldiers made during the services in Afghanistan. He also mentioned about the recent trip of President Ghani to Canberra and upcoming trip of Governor-General Cosgrove to Kabul that marked a new framework of cooperation between two counries.

Kabul, 4 October 2017 - Hon Sir Peter Cosgrove, the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia was welcomed by His Excellency Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Kabul.
Both heads of states discussed enhansing bilateral cooperation in the areas of security, economy and culture. President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani thanked the Governo-General for Australian Government's cooperation on military support and fighting against global terrorism and appreciated their support to the Resolute Support Mission.
President Ghani expressed his tribute to the soldiers, fallen and those who are currently in service, to the Governor-General and thanked him and the people of Australia for there services in Afghanistan.
Governor-General Cosgrove welcomed the United State's new strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia and assured that Australia will stand by Afghanistan the fight against international terrirsm and extremism.
The Governor-General also extended Australia's support in the areas of mining and enhansing technical cooperation.
The Governo-General was also invited by the President of Afghanistan for a luncheon together with the Afghan National Cricket team.
