The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan issues passports only Afghan Citizens residing in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
Requirements for obtaining new computerised passports
For issuance of new computerised passports, the following documents must be provided:
Applicants must provide their original Tazkira (Afghan National ID Card) along with their hand-written passport, otherwise new passports cannot be issued.
The applicant must bring the original copy of their Tazkira to the Embassy, in an event where the applicant only has the copy of their Tazkira, the copy will be sent to the Ministry of Interior Affairs in Afghanistan for verification and the new passport will be issued once it has been verified.
If a child is born in Australia, New Zealand and Fiji and wants to apply for an Afghan passport, the parents must provide their own National ID and the child’s birth certificate must be sent to the embassy along with their application.
Each applicant must fill in the application form separately in BLOCK letters using black or blue ink.
Three (3) recent passport size photographs, certified by a JP (Justice of the Peace) must be sent to the Embassy.
The applicant must also provide proof of address by sending a copy of utility bill, drivers licence or bank statement etc.
The passport fee is $180 AUD each, payable by ‘Money Order or Draft Bank Cheque’ to the ‘Embassy of Afghanistan’. This excludes postage costs and any other associated costs. The Embassy does NOT accept cash under any circumstance.
All passport applicants must attend an interview at the embassy.
Lost or Stolen Passports
If the passport is lost or stolen, the police must be notified immediately and the police report must be submitted to the embassy to invalidate the lost or stolen passports. According to the Article 28 of the passport issuance regulation, the applicant must pay double the passport issuance fee and provide their Tazkira (Afghan national ID card). Otherwise a new passport will not be issued to the applicant.
Passport Extension
Passport can not be extended anymore, you need to apply for a new passport.
Passports extension were valid till 24th of November, 2017.
Receiving the Passport
Applicants are responsible for postage cost for delivering the passport using registered recommended mail. Once the required documents are submitted to the embassy, you will receive the computerised passport by post. There is no exact indication of the duration in which the new passport will be received. However, after receiving all the required documents without any delay, will be able to provide the applicant with an estimated time limit in which they will receive their passport. Please do not contact the embassy before that time limit is passed.
The process of issuing the new machine readable passport will take at least four weeks. You must consider this before making any travel plans to avoid further complications. It is worthwhile to make your travel arrangements after you receive your passport.
Cost and validity of Passport
Machine readable passports are valid for 5 years from the date of issue and the passport fee is $180 AUD each, payable by ‘Eftpos machine in the embassy, Money Order from Post Office or Draft Bank Cheque’ to the ‘Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’. This excludes postage costs and any other associated costs. The Embassy does NOT accept cash under any circumstance.
